BENEFITS OF CINNAMON

It is rich in minerals, fiber and antioxidants

Cinnamon as a source of fiber and micronutrients. Particularly rich in fiber with more than 50 g per 100 g according to Nutrition, cinnamon is a spice that is also full of vitamins and minerals. Numerous studies have shown that it contains high levels of manganese, iron and calcium. These minerals have very distinct roles in our body. Transport and storage of oxygen, strengthening of the immune system, preservation of bones and teeth, … Cinnamon is full of benefits and is involved in many mechanisms of our body.

As a powerful antioxidant

Cinnamon is one of the richest ingredients in antioxidants. Generally speaking, antioxidants slow down or prevent the oxidation of cells. Antioxidants therefore play a key role in the aging of cells, but also the appearance of cancers and cardiovascular diseases. In addition to these properties, a study has noted an anti-inflammatory property to remove the process of inflammation and therefore including some pain.

To prevent the appearance of cancers

Numerous scientific studies show today that cinnamon has antitumor and anticancer virtues, in particular thanks to its richness in antioxidants. Be careful however, these studies put a point of attention on the fact that cinnamon alone is not enough to limit the propagation of cancerous cells and that it is not a magic remedy. It could, however, have a positive impact when combined with medical treatment.

To boost the immune system

Rich in vitamins and minerals and antioxidant, this spice is very effective to naturally strengthen your immune system. It can thus contribute to cure all your small winter ailments: cold and runny nose or blocked nose, headaches caused by the cold, flu and other viruses. Add it to your hot drinks to get the most out of its benefits!

To preserve cardiovascular health

Several scientific studies affirm that cinnamon has virtues to preserve cardiovascular health. A recent report published in 2019 tells us that this spice would have the ability to reduce blood pressure. The same report also reveals that a significant decrease in overall cholesterol, including bad cholesterol (LDL) would have been observed with a regular consumption of cinnamon of 3 g per day.

As an ally against type 2 diabetes

Cinnamon is also known and recognized by studies to be anti-diabetic by its ability to balance blood sugar, reduce the impact of certain foods on blood sugar, but also its ability to maintain the cardiovascular system in good health, yet often at risk in diabetic patients.

Cinnamon helps reduce the impact of foods on blood sugar.

Numerous studies indicate today that consuming cinnamon allows to slow down the absorption of glucose from your food, and thus to reduce the impact of the latter on our glycemia. Indeed, cinnamon will interact with many digestive enzymes and thus slow down the speed at which the digestive tract will break down carbohydrates. By slowing down this process, cinnamon helps to reduce the risk of blood sugar spikes, by diffusing sugar more gradually in the blood and avoiding blood sugar spikes.

To increase insulin sensitivity

In addition, many studies have also observed that cinnamon contributes to improve the sensitivity to insulin. Indeed, cinnamon contains a compound with an action close to that of insulin: the methyl-hydroxychalcone polymer (MHCP). This substance would be able to multiply almost by 20 the process which transforms sugar into energy. For the same amount of insulin, thanks to cinnamon, its impact is stronger and more effective.

Studies show a decrease in fasting blood sugar levels of 10% to 29%, thanks to a consumption of 1 to 6 grams of cinnamon per day.

To lower cholesterol

Still according to the same studies, in addition to lowering fasting blood sugar, cinnamon acts on several mechanisms, including the presence of cholesterol. We spoke to you about it just before, but cinnamon has indeed an interesting impact on lipids as well as on the global and bad cholesterol.

The limits of cinnamon consumption

Be careful, however, because it seems that the effects are not the same depending on the profile of the patients. Thus, according to this study, people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) higher than 27 would be more likely to be receptive to the benefits of cinnamon. In terms of cinnamon dosage for diabetes, however, it is best to talk to your diabetologist. Regardless, one study found positive effects for 1, 3 and 6 grams of cinnamon consumption per day in diabetic patients. On the other hand, the spice is recommended to achieve a better control of blood sugar, but it will never replace the usual hypoglycemic drugs.

To stimulate our brain

Cinnamon as a contributor to treating Alzheimer’s disease

A 2013 study highlighted cinnamon’s potential as a preventive food to fight the onset of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Cinnamon also appears to have an impact when Alzheimer’s disease is mild to moderate. Cinnamon is said to have neuroprotective properties.

How can cinnamon impact the development of Alzheimer’s disease?

To understand how cinnamon can affect Alzheimer’s disease, one must delve into medical and scientific studies. In order to make this information accessible, we have tried to simplify the explanation of the process as much as possible. In our brain cells, the Tau protein is responsible for assembling microtubules. In patients with Alzheimer’s disease, these proteins become twisted and clump together. They form what are called aggregates, and interfere with interactions with microtubules. Twisted in the nerve cells of the brain, these proteins become harmful. This phenomenon is characteristic of Alzheimer’s patients. Cinnamon, by its neuro-protective properties, will then inhibit the aggregation of this protein. The Tau protein can then fulfill its role in an effective way because cinnamon prevents it from deforming and thus from forming aggregates. Thanks to studies on the subject, cinnamon is now considered an interesting treatment complement to prevent the onset and or limit the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Cinnamon to stimulate the brain and learning

But cinnamon is not only useful against diseases. Indeed, it would be interesting for the brain in general. By increasing the level of sodium benzoate in the brain, cinnamon would be at the origin of the stimulation of cognitive functions. It allows to repair and create neurons but also to reduce nervous tension. This is due to the fact that sodium benzoate acts on our hippocampus, an area of the brain that affects memory and learning.

To relieve digestive problems

With all its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, cinnamon obviously has an effect on our digestive system. And not the least, since it provides many virtues! Indeed, cinnamon helps to calm heartburn and digestion problems. Between acid reflux, bloating, nausea and even more restrictive effects such as diarrhea, indigestion and vomiting can be mitigated or even eliminated by the consumption of cinnamon. To rebalance your intestinal flora by consuming cinnamon, prefer to drink it in beverages like tea or herbal tea.

Cinnamon against hair loss

This spice has the ability to stimulate hair growth, but also to strengthen it, thus limiting hair loss. By improving the condition of the hair scale, it becomes less fragile and more resistant. Cinnamon is also used to lighten hair thanks to natural peroxidase, an enzyme naturally present in cinnamon. Let’s be clear, the lightening will obviously be light!

Against acne and blemishes

Recently, a scientific study has shown that the properties of cinnamon in oil format can reduce acne on the skin and various blemishes. Cinnamon also helps to tighten pores, resulting in visibly smoother and softer skin.

Is as an ally against fatigue and muscle pain

We told you above, cinnamon has the ability to save you from blood sugar spikes and therefore the state of fatigue that they would have caused. Thus, you already avoid a good part of the tiredness that you could have felt during the day.
Secondly, cinnamon is anti-inflammatory and therefore helps to relieve pain and relax muscles. To take advantage of this benefit, it may be interesting to perform a massage with cinnamon oil.
Finally, cinnamon could be effective to fight against the pains related to the cold, and in particular the headaches and the migraines.
